All our Nova collection items, like this chair, are made of teak wood. The seat and back are woven with rattan cane, a traditional method (caning) that makes the chairs strong and durable due to the cross-weaving. Rattan is a climbing palm that uses trees for support and can grow up to 100 meters long. It is mainly found in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. Teak has been popular for furniture for centuries due to its durability, even outdoors. Teak is native to Asia, but large plantations have been growing in Indonesia since the 16th century. Since it does not grow in Indonesia's natural forests, no tropical forests are cut down for teak wood. The Indonesian government has regulated the timber trade since 2016, to ensure that only legal wood is imported into the EU. These aspects together make teak production in Indonesia and its use for furniture both economically and ecologically sustainable.
Because we work with natural materials, it is important to properly maintain the chair. Keep the humidity in your home between 40% and 60%, especially in winter, and do not place the chair too close to a heater or air conditioner. Wiping occasionally with a damp cloth is sufficient to keep the chair clean. Small hairline cracks may occur, but are normal. Contact our customer service for larger cracks.
